If you're looking for a book giving a peek into the world of nonprofits then look elsewhere. Adam Braun gives the tale of a nonprofit created by a straight white male with celebrity and 1% connections. Overall the entire book feels like a man of privilege looking down on us peons and telling us to try harder to change the world, barely acknowledging his many legs up in life and acting like a money hungry CEO while trying to build schools for poor children. While the book has some great stories and could have had some wonderful thoughtful insights, the holier than thou tone and general lack of regard he had for his peers and coworkers left a bad taste in my mouth. I admit that I even rooted for him to turn it around most of the way through the book until one particular chapter where he admits that his immediate response to finding out his workers had been brutally assaulted and mugged was to chew them out. Considering his desperate need to make himself look like the savior in all of his stories I'm absolutely sure it was worse than he described and while he made systematic changes in the company so it couldn't happen again, I think it really showed his true colors as a person and his regard for his peers.All three of the stars go to the people who built the schools, taught at the schools, funded the schools and learned at the schools, as well as the idea that we can do our best to attempt to make some good in the world, even if he did take it too far by looking down on those who decide to make those changes closer to home.
