THE KNIGHT AND THE NECROMANCER is a single epic fantasy in three parts, not unlike The Lord of the Rings ... if the gay subtext of that book were a lot more, err, texty.In BOOK ONE: THE CAPITAL, Lee introduces us to a vibrant cast of characters: Roland, the noble knight and Cinnamon Roll who is too sweet and good for this cruel world; Sairis, apprentice to the once-mighty "dark lord" Karkaroth, who underneath his prickly exterior really just wants to be loved; Daphne, Roland's sister and the newly-ascended queen of Mistala, a whip-smart and courageous woman who Has A Plan(TM) and is desperately trying to bring it to fruition amidst a bunch of cranky old guys with a truly epic case of testosterone poisoning; and a variety of other, minor characters with their own agendas, schemes and foibles. Lee has always done an excellent job with characterization, but I fell for this group of heroes way faster than I expected to.I came to this story for the epic fantasy, and a look at the early years of Lee's world after The Sundering. I stayed for the relationships. Roland and Daphne feel very believable as brother and sister, and Roland and Sairis are heart-breakingly believable in their fragile, wounded dancing around each other. I'm not the target market for the sex in this book, which is all M/M, but the relationships are compelling even if the combination of anatomy involved is not to your preference. (This has also been the case in Lee's Incubus series, which features a more diverse selection of sexy fun-times.)Book One ends on a gut-wrenching cliffhanger. Fortunately, Books Two and Three are available for purchase right now! Buy them all at once and save yourself the agony of waiting for the second book to download when you've finished the first.
